Knik Glacier Landing from Anchorage
- Duration: 2 Hours (approx.)
- Location: Anchorage, AK
- Product code: PQGWK4
With a departure from Merrill Field in downtown Anchorage this is the only Anchorage based tour that includes a glacier landing. Depending on the clouds and wind there are several routes, head straight over the mountains and see the rugged terrain just outside Anchorage. Moose, black bears, and grizzly bears are often seen in the mountains around Peters Creek and Eklutna. If the clouds are low, fly over Eagle River, Chugiak, and Birchwood and then back into the Knik Valley. As you get closer you get a sense of scale! Lake George, with its massive icebergs, appears on the other side of the Knik and the icefall of Colony Glacier with vertical walls of ice over 200 foot high. Your pilot will land right in the middle of the Knik Glacier, where you get out of the helicopter and spend about 30 minutes exploring. Crampons are provided to safely hike on the ice. Take pictures of the azure blue lakes on top of the glacier, the crevasses and ice ‘sculptures’ made by wind, sunshine, and time. After the walk, board the helicopter for the flight back to base. On the return trip, watch for moose in the river valley. Suitable for people with limited mobility.
